Can I Really Hear Rear Speakers When I Add Them to My Bike?

We get this question ALL the time at Volunteer Audio, so let us answer it once and for all… YES, of course, you can hear the rear speakers when they’re added to your bike!

When you purchase from Volunteer Audio, we take several steps to ensure you get the best possible sound from your rear speakers:

• Proper Speaker Placement: When installing 6×9” speakers, we use specially designed cut-in kits that position the speaker higher in the lid. This saves space in your bag while angling the speaker toward you for better sound clarity. Most replacement lids don’t provide this benefit.
• Ample Power for Rear Speakers: We make sure the rear speakers are powered correctly so they’re loud enough to be heard even when positioned behind you.
• Customized Amplifier Settings: When using a factory radio, flashing it can cause the loss of fader control. We account for this by slightly adjusting the amplifier's settings to ensure the sound fades toward the rear.
• Balanced Sound: The rear speakers won’t overpower the front ones. The front speakers point directly at you, naturally being louder, but the rear speakers surround you with fuller sound. This creates a concert-like experience and adds rich mid-bass, completing your soundscape.

At Volunteer Audio, we do the heavy lifting for you. We make upgrading your bike’s sound system as easy as possible by doing all the prep work on our end. When you receive your kit, it’ll be as close to “plug-and-play” as possible—ready to install right out of the box. We’ll set the amplifier’s gains and filters, so you don’t need to worry about technical adjustments. All you’ll need to do is mount the amplifier with the included hardware, run the wiring to the seat and battery, and install the speakers. The Soundstream WHD.9813 is a premium upgrade head unit designed specifically for 1998–2013 Harley-Davidson® Touring Series motorcycles, offering modern connectivity, enhanced audio control, and a bright widescreen display — all while maintaining a factory-style installation. Designed to install directly into the OEM fairing using factory mounting hardware and the original AM/FM antenna, the WHD.9813 requires no brackets, trim panels, or antenna adapters, making installation simple and clean.

The WHD.9813 includes a powerful 4-channel Class A/B amplifier that is 2-ohm stable, delivering strong, clear sound directly to your speakers. For larger audio builds, 5-volt RCA outputs for front, rear, and subwoofer channels provide a clean signal for external amplifiers.

 ADVANCED SOUND TUNING

Dial in your system with a 15-band digital equalizer, featuring two custom EQ memories and music genre presets. Adjustable high-pass crossovers for front and rear channels plus low-pass and subsonic filtering for the subwoofer output allow precise sound shaping for any setup.

 DESIGNED FOR HARLEY TOURING MOTORCYCLES

Built specifically for Harley touring bikes, the WHD.9813 retains factory handlebar controls, includes a 21” USB cable for flexible installation, and supports the OEM antenna connection. Its IPX5 water-resistant faceplate ensures reliable operation in rain, washing, and harsh riding conditions.

**Headset use not supported — WHD.9813 radios do not work with wired or wireless headsets.**

Rarely 1998-2013 CVO models have factory MTX branded speakers and amplifiers. Some have no factory amplifiers. If your CVO has no factory amp or has the MTX branded amplifiers then this radio will be plug n play and retain the factory amplifiers. More common we see models with a Harman Branded amplifier mounted under the Tour Pak of Limited models. These amplifiers can not be retained and must be replaced and rewired. All of these have a Harman branded radio which is not what we are looking for. You need to check the amplifier brand. This also applies to non CVO models that have added on  a Harmon amplifier.
